Well!
Just returned from the celebration of St. Joseph at one of my kids’ schools – Saint Rose Academy. Take a look:
Hey Catholic schools: More of this and fewer fabricated-from-scratch-yesterday- Earth Day-Diversity-Everyone-Is-Special Celebrations, okay?
Because when you do this – and similar celebrations, like this same school does for Our Lady of Guadalupe – here’s what you get:
- Multiculturalism and Diversity – a multi-ethnic group of kids and adults celebrating a 1st century Jewish father from Palestine, played by a kid of Mexican heritage, a celebration shaped by Italian traditions, facilitated by women in medieval garb and a priest from India.
- Community! We always want community, right? So here you go – that diverse group brought together through planning, community outreach, making food, decorating and participating in worship.
- Outreach! Every family was asked to contribute a bag of groceries. The eighth graders are going out to distribute these bags this afternoon to community agencies that support those in need.
- Engaging the Whole Person! Here you go: Singing, processing, dressing up like (like saints), eating, sharing, praying, smelling incense and tasting caponata and cuccidati.
