All right people, here’s a Wednesday afternoon surprise.
I was doing a bit of research for the New Thing (soon, soon), and I ran across this nifty artifact. It’s a “Rock n’ Roll Mass” by a Chicago-based group called the Exceptions – a member of which was a young Peter Cetera, before he went on to be a founding member of the actual group, Chicago.

Released as an EP, the liner notes say the music isn’t intended for use in the Mass, but “is offered as an example of what some young people find to be a meaningful expression of worship.”
There’s nothing extraordinary about the music, and some of it (like the Lamb of God) just doesn’t fit. The Gloria is pretty bad. But…I kind of dig the Holy – especially the introduction, and the introduction (words said by the priest) to the Our Father got my attention. So here you go. Peter Cetera (I think he does a lot of the lead vocals) laying down some Mass parts, circa 1966:
You know what? Still objectively better constructed than most P&W music I heard in high school. It definitely belongs to a certain era though.
