Did you really drive through Turkey, Texas? Very impressive. That’s really off the “main road”.
I wanted to see Palo Duro canyon, and a lot of stuff I read said that the best views are not from the state park, but from driving 207 between Claude and Silverton. I was just on the way, and wasn’t going to spend time in the park anyway, so it seemed like a good idea. And then I went briefly to Capstone Canyon and the way down ( I went Dallas-Shreveport-Jackson MS – home. Basically I-20 from Dallas) the way toook me through Turkey! It probably added two hours to the trip, but I wasn’t going to drive Santa Fe- Alabama in one day anyway…
When I lived in Austin many years ago I drove through 2/3’s of the Texas counties (there’s 270 of them) but never many it up there. The view from I40 even though far away is enticing, so I bet it was pretty.
