Here we go

August 3, 2021 by Amy Welborn

Just made a reservation for an accommodation…so I’m feeling all frisky and ready to go right now, even though the dates are a couple of weeks away.

So let’s see where we’re at in life right now:

(Not including the 3 who are almost all over 30…remember this parents of young ones. Some day you’ll have kids who are over 30…)

School:

College Guy is at the beach with a posse of friends this week, and will move into his new apartment (w/roommate) next week some time. Classes are registered for (this was a transfer situation, so that piece of the puzzle wasn’t fitted in until a couple of weeks ago – econ major if you must know – ), wisdom teeth removed and healed from (a major summer goal), and life looks very good for him.

Kid #5 is, as I’ve mentioned, being promoted (by himself and by me) from HS junior to senior this summer. That was quick. He’ll be taking Government/Econ, Physics and Apologetics through a local co-op , AP Statistics with a tutor who teaches high school for her day job and Latin III – the same (not with the same teacher). All eminently qualified. Piano will continue with his Candidate-for-A-Doctorate-in-Chamber-Music-From-Eastman teacher. I’ll guide British Literature, and he’ll study history on his own, according to his own interests. The college in which he’s interested opens admissions 9/1. I don’t know if he’ll apply then or wait until his October testing scores (PSAT and SAT) come in. It’s up to him. That, plus his church organist job, Fraternus & his time with his friends (biking all around town, boxing gym at least 3X a week, swimming until 1 am some nights, full days at a water park over the past couple of weeks, for example) will make for a very busy year.

At this point, this might be a decent, not-dispiriting-at-all end to my at-home parenting career.

The next couple of weeks will be about getting College Guy settled and for Kid #5, getting the Last Days of Summer enjoyed with his friends – he has three sets, all of whom start brick-n-mortar school at different times. A bunch this week at the Catholic high school, one next at the public fine arts school and then two more the following at another local (neighborhood) private school. He has loads of friends, but…none from the homeschool crowd, it seems.

And now…some travel?

Get Out o’ Town

We have three weeks between the time College Guy settles and the start of co-op classes for Kid #5. His music teacher will be away at Eastman for most of that, so why not take off? But…as I mused before…where to go?

Because of the church job, and because he took three weeks off from it mid-summer, he really can’t miss weekends right now. So what we’re looking at is mostly trips within easy driving distance – yes, we could fly places, but that would probably require renting a car, and that’s crazy right now, in case you didn’t know. And there are plenty of places to drive to around here.

As I mentioned before, I’m looking at a Mississippi Delta music and literature (that part being Oxford) jaunt, but first up, I think – well, I know, since I just made the reservations for part of it – is in another direction. I never divulge plans before we go, so I’ll just say this – it involves history, and it involves nature. The reservations were for a unique, hike-in facility, which I’m really excited about.

I did take a look at flights to Oaxaca. I admit it. I would not mind getting out of this stupid country for a few days.

And I’m not saying it won’t happen, either. That would be a very doable Sunday-Saturday trip, even from Glorious Birmingham, Alabama.

That time we went to Japan
