Always nice to find a new time-suck on the Internets...
One of the sources for films is Radharc, an Irish film production company with interesting origins:
Radharc was an independent production company established by Father Joe Dunn, Father Desmond Forristal and other like-minded priests to make programmes for television and non-theatrical exhibition. Between 1961 and 1996 they made over 400 films in 75 countries on social, political and religious issues. To see more of The Radharc Collection click here
The Radharc archives are here, but only a fraction of the films are available for viewing online, and I stumbled upon them via the Irish Film Institute site, which has other collections you’ll be interested in- I focused on those with the “Catholic” or “Church” tag and found a few others of interest – including this simple, yet mesmerizing early 20th century film of people leaving church.
I love the priest-host’s wry, relaxed demeanor. It’s interesting to see how plus ca change, plus ca meme chose. People refuse to budge from their spot at the end of the pew, umbrellas are carelessly wielded, and what happens when the priest starts preaching is hilarious. Also notice the man with the Longest Head Ever (mesmerizing) and, despite the current trend of theologizing “veiling” as a reach back into tradition…hardly a veil to be seen. Most women before Vatican II didn’t wear veils in Mass. My mother certainly didn’t. What they wore on their heads depended on local culture, but if you actually look at archival photographs of women in Catholic Masses you’ll see mostly hats and scarves. Veils in a pinch, more so in some cultures than others, and more so for children. There was certainly no spirituality related to veils, specifically, not that it’s illegitimate to develop one now. Go for it! But historically, things were simpler: you covered your head in church because the Church told you to, it was in the Bible, and you wore a hat when you went out of the house, anyway. Not to open that can of worms, but there it is.
I don’t think there is a way to embed these videos on a website, so you’ll just have to head to the link. Here are some direct links:
