That's an unfair judgment of Fr. Steve's comment. He didn't say CTA is bad because the participants are old. He's saying that *because* CTA is so dreadful, it's a good thing it hasn't attracted any young folks-- it means the movement is near its end.

I also love Ciaran Hinds. He was perfect in the A&E version of Persuasion. A great Shirley Henderson vehicle is Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself--a phenomenal (IMHO) Scottish flick that has a number of Catholic undertones to it.

Although I didn't always "get" Humanae Vitae as an adolescent, in large part because it wasn't well-explained or taught, I've come to realize the great wisdom in it as an adult, and I try to share it with my own adolescent students -- that it's not a series of prohibitions but a series of affirmations of the beautiful and sacred.

The reason I read it as an adult is because of the priest who celebrated our wedding. In our premarital counseling, he mentioned that one of the reasons he converted to Catholicism in the first place was because of HV.

And incidentally, our first child is due on 25 July this year!

More sympathy to Katie. I once had someone shoot a "teenage MOTHER!" comment my way while walking my 5 year old sister thru the airport (I was 17.) My sister was insisting on carrying her own suitcase & honestly being kind of a bother.

My aunt once overheard someone make a comment about us in a grocery store and proceeded to tell the commenter the tragic story of how we were orphans and I was raising my sisters. (My mom is still alive.) So you could always resort to that.

I would drive across the country to see not only Ciaran Hinds but also James Purefoy (Mark Antony) and Ray Stevenson (Titus Pullo).

At least Kevin McKidd shows up on American television from time to time :-)

Randy,

Pope Benedict published a letter to the Diocese of Rome a few weeks ago about the education of the young and I think he used the phrase "emergency in education" there, too.

And when was the last time someone quoted William of St. Thierry? He's one of the proponents of lectio divina. In the Golden Epistle, William wrote: "The reading should also stimulate the feelings and give rise to prayer, which should interrupt your reading: an interruption which should not so much hamper the reading as restore to it a mind ever more purified for understanding (sec. 123)."

Maybe the second hardest thing to make nowadays is a frothy, fun little comedy with some backbone. If you make it historical, some things get easier -- but it's still hard for the filmmakers to figure out tone.

The hardest thing to make is a love story or an epic, because people aren't sure they know what love or a hero is.

Shirley Henderson is a wonderful actress whose specialty is stealing scenes from bigger stars. She has such a memorable, little-girl voice. (The Gilbert and Sullivan movie is Topsy Turvy, BTW.) I'd watch just about anything she's in, just to see her.
