Beautiful Mass. Jammed church. Dancers led the way.
Both parish priests concelebrated. The parochial vicar is fluent in Spanish and he was the primary celebrant. Music was mariachi but also some basic chanted responses. The Responsorial Psalm was chanted a capella and was quite moving in its simplicity – as unaccompanied simple chant tends to be – in any language.
It’s a feast! Incense in the house!
Viva!
Blessings of sacramentals after Mass.

Same here. There was a morning Mass at 5:30 and an evening Mass at 7 p.m. Both had music beginning 30 minutes before Mass. The church was standing room only for the 7 p.m Mass. Many were dressed in traditional dress, especially the children. There was a huge display in the Narthex with flowers, statues, rosaries, flags, candles, etc. Many family groups were stopping to take photos in front of the display in the Narthex. And there were children — lots and lots of children. I’m pretty sure there was a procession across town during the early morning hours, but I’m not sure of the details on that.
I enjoyed your photos and took some myself.
Did you hear the music at the Guadalupe Mass in St. Peter’s? An Argentine group sang parts of Ariel Ramirez “Misa Criolla” accompanied with indigenous instruments. It was so beautiful.

Those are great pictures. I got up early yesterday so I could get to Mass at 4:30 a.m. where it was standing room only. At my parish there’s an owner of a taco truck who gives out free tamales and “champurrado” (chocolate-flavored “atole” or maize drink) to everyone in fulfillment of a vow he made to the Virgin. For the sleepy heads who can’t make it to “Las Mañanitas” before dawn, we also have a big celebration that evening that we call “Las Nochecitas” and the taco truck owner shows up then too.
When I was little I always looked forward to seeing the “danzantes”, or “matachines” as we call them, on December 12. Deacon Greg Kandra linked a story on the ” matachines” tradition a few days ago on his blog (http://www.patheos.com/blogs/deaconsbench/2011/12/dancing-for-mary/). I think you’d find interesting..
