Working on the Weekend »

Vulcan Red

April 2, 2011 by Amy Welborn

Today’s travels, all about 35 miles from here.

DeSoto Caverns.  Overpriced for the quality of “attractions” that are offered aside from the cave itself, but J had been aching to return since a school field trip last year, so since this is his birthday weekend, I decided that it was closer and cheaper than Six Flags, which had been my original thought.

They liked it, but I also think they had almost as much fun just a few miles down the road, here:

Kymulga Grist Mill ,Park & Covered Bridge.

Where they still use the old equipment to grind up cornmeal and grits.

Some newer equipment, just a few miles away, back toward Birmingham:

Morgan Creek Vineyards. The wine is all muscadine and as such a little too grape-y for my taste, but it was still an enjoyable stop and the boys were pretty amazed by those vats.

All so simple, all so close, it was pronounced a “great day.”  To run around, shoot arrows, walk underground amid ancient dripping stone, to have a picnic, to learn about how people make things and how things work. It’s what they like to do.  And at this point, they still need a driver, so here I am.

As my cancer progresses, I find ‘Charlotte was Both’ a tonic reminder of human-size faith in a blogosphere of global gigantism which leads to despair and/or apathy. Thanks, Amy.

    Jeff
God gave me the means to retire early for one reason…I work on His Bride…He works on my bride. I will pray by name for you for a very long time to come for you are in His Bride. I will pray for cure if it is within His simple will or for your deepening charism in living it out with trust which is probably saving someone you love without your knowing it. Either way….you can’t lose. This life is the vestibule…the mere hallway. The great dinner and dance hall is behind this pretty entrance door we haven’t opened yet. In there is a glorified man who endured scourging and spit for us….and then endured worse for us.
    I work on His Bride….He works on mine. A deal’s a deal with Him….a covenant’s a covenant.
