I opened up a box of books that had been in storage for almost two years, and this was the first one I pulled out, a book I didn’t even know we owned :

“Cheerful Ascetic”? Several of the Fathers saw the beatitude: “blessed are those who mourn” as being about asceticism (not about death of people) and thus about mourning the hollowness of the things of this world as one fasted etc. How they handled “for they shall be comforted” is a mystery though. Fathers could be incorrect. And Aquinas sometimes followed them when they were and he repeats their view: ” Again, men seek consolation for the toils of the present life, in the lusts and pleasures of the world. Hence Our Lord promises comfort to those that mourn.”…ie the pleasures of this world.
Cheerfully doing asceticism… probably comes later in life. Right now I’m having lacy swiss cheese after a d’anjou pear with a Minervois wine. I’m cheerful but not from food asceticism right now… but my lenten sacrifice for today does not involve food.
That’s AWESOME!! Recently, we filmed our show at St. Alphonsus Church in Baltimore, where Blessed Francis Seelos was the pastor before he moved to LA. Monsignor Bastress, the church’s current pastor, spoke about this book, and how he loves what Blessed Francis can teach us about the way he was so cheerful. He was a good friend of St. John Neumann, and it seems like he was an overall awesome guy. He also seems to be following you! (lol) You should watch the show we do on St. Alphonsus–it’s on EWTN May 2 (5 pm EST) and May 6 (1 pm EST). It’s not ALL about Blessed Francis, but we do talk about him. If he is canonized, St. Alphonsus will be the only church in the whole country where two canonized saints once lived. Very cool. :)
