Day of Penance

January 21, 2009 by Amy Welborn

“In all the dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion, and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life. The Mass “For Peace and Justice” (no. 22 of the “Masses for Various Needs”) should be celebrated with violet vestments as an appropriate liturgical observance for this day.

General Instruction of the Roman Missal, no. 373″

Oops, our priest wore green today. But he did mention the observance.

And none of this was done at the daily Mass I attended this morning. Abortion was not even mentioned. It wasn’t mentioned at the Mass I attended for Pro-Life Sunday either, though I have heard it was at other Masses in my Parish.

I live in St Louis, where Archbishop Burke’s excellent example sadly has not affected some of our Priests.

I live in St Louis and at the daily Mass I attend the priest and deacon wore purple vestments. They explained why the purple vestments at the beginning of the Mass. The excellent homily was on pro-life issues.

For the first time ever, the priest wore purple, celebrated the Mass for Peace and Justice, and gave an excellent pro-life homily. After the Mass, a group stayed and prayed the rosary for life. This had also been announced through a flyer. At long last!!

I am a new principal at a very small Catholic school. We had a school wide Communion service followed by a rosary led by the children. Used meditations from Father Pavone. Powerful. Invited the parish but only had a handful attend. Father came and told me afterward he would have Mass next year and speak on pro-life. Its a start. If we smaller groups lead the way….

In north central Iowa Father H. wore purple yesterday and celebrated the Mass for Peace and Justice during which he delivered a dynamite homily (per usual), with parishioners staying afterward to pray a Rosary for Life. I felt connected in spirit and faith to those who were marching in DC.

Our Polish priest wore violet. The middle-schoolers (6,7,8 grades) attended the morning mass and Father Jack called abortion what it is: A Mortal Sin.
A Taize Vigil included poignant comments by the Pastor (thank you Father Hal).
Now join with me in forgiving President’s Obama’s trespass against life.

Gorgeous Rosary for Life and Mass for the Unborn in Atlanta yesterday. We had good weather for the March for Life as well. The church was absolutely packed — standing room only an hour before Mass began, plus overflow in the church basement watching on a video feed.

Our priests did wear violet vestments, and the Archbishop was joined by the Archbishop Emeritus, the abbot of the local Trappist monastery, and priests from the Archdiocese of Atlanta as well as the Diocese of Savannah. I was struck by the sheer number of young priests among the group. Archbishop Gregory gave a wonderful homily as usual.
