Advent
Prayer
That children may be respected, loved, and never exploited.
That during Christmas the peoples of the Earth may recognize the Incarnate Word as the light that illuminates every person, and that every nation may open its doors to Christ, the Savior of the World.

Obviously the Vigneron appointment will garner the most interest.
However, I note that the resignation of McRaith in Owensboro is a “Dash 2″ resignation. This refers to Canon 401-2 of the Code of Canon Law, which says that “A diocesan Bishop who, because of illness or some other grave reason, has become unsuited for the fulfillment of his office, is earnestly requested to offer his resignation from office.”
Our blog friend Diogenes is very interested in these “Dash 2″ resignations, because in the recent past, the “some other grave reason” has included Bishops who had Stuff They Wanted To Hide.
Now it may be that McRaith really is ill. Whichever way, it’s worth checking out.
On a related matter: I do wish that the Vatican would mention the state or province where these appointments take place. We’re Church geeks here, so we (should) know that Owensboro is in Kentucky. Would anyone else know from that announcement? Or that Edmunston appointment in Canada? Where in Canada? Is that a mis-print for Edmunton in Alberta? The outgoing and incoming bishops both have French names, so perhaps Edmunston is in Quebec? We can’t tell from this.
Sorry. Just needed to vent.
Edmunston is a diocese in New Brunswick and is heavily (mostly?) Francophone.
http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org has a complete list of dioceses with info about each one, among other good stuff. (Man, I’m glad somebody wants to do this stuff, but wow, what a lot of work!)
But it’s apparently “Edmundston”.
We will miss Bishop Vigneron here in Oakland. May God bless him and he guides his new See! Ad multos annos!
Bishop Vigneron had been rumored as a possible successor to Cardinal Mahoney in LA. So much for that rumor.
Let’s not forget the happenings in Vancouver, BC. Last Friday, Archbishop J. Michael Miller was (elevated? promoted?) after a year-and-a-half as coadjutor archbishop. And there was much rejoicing.
