Your wish is my command

May 4, 2008 by Amy

Two people have written me asking for links to the originals of my pope-praying-rosary-in-shades photo I use as a header sometimes. So I took that as a sign, and dug through the archives at Papa Ratzinger Forum, confident that they’d come through for me, and sure enough. (Didn’t take long – I knew it was from last summer)

Here’s the link to the original AP photo by Alessia Giuliani

I always thought the guy on the Pope’s right looked cool, like an American character actor. Nice to have a name to go with the face.

You realize why it’s popular, of course. You take one look at it and you instantly think of The Bishop! by Monty Python and The Peter Gunn Theme (here by the Blues Brothers).

Papa Benny redefining cool. Gotta love it.

“It’s 7777 kilometres to Chicago, we’ve got a full day planned, half a decade to go, it’s cloudy, and we’re wearing sunglasses.”

    “Pray it!”

I’ve always like the fact that Il Papa is the only one in that picture wearing shades. It definitely gives him a decided “cool” factor.

Nice photo! The future’s so bright, he’s gotta wear shades!
