Catholics Come Home

February 24, 2008 by Amy

Here is a fantastic evangelization effort – at least judging from the spots they’ve put together so far.

Catholics Come Home is a group dedicated to reconnecting Catholics with their faith, with the byproduct of deepening the faith of all of us.

You really need to look at the videos they’ve produced – they’re linked on the bottom of the page – one is just a stunning overview of what the Catholic Church is, the second is a reminder that life is short, but a merciful Christ is waiting for us, and the last contains stories of personal witness. These commercials are miles beyond the quality of most Catholic media efforts we see and are deeply substantive and do things, IMHO exactly right:

They connect the soul’s deepest thirst to the living water offered by Christ, which is found in his Body, the Church.

It is not “Come see us, we’re a vibrant community and we like you.” It’s not, “Come back and reconnect with your family traditions because it’s good to do that.”  It’s not, “Y’all better come back Or Else.”

It’s simply – Jesus lives, Jesus saves – you – through His Church, and as a part of His Church, you’ll be a part of bringing His love to the others who thirst. As long as you’re breathing, it’s never too late.

Catholics Come Home is also working with the Diocese of Phoenix during Lent. Here’s an article:

The television spots “really resonate with the overwhelming majority of people looking for some answers, in need of healing in their lives, reconciliation with God and the love and support of their Catholic family,” he said.

Peterson said it is his prayer that the campaign will motivate active Catholics to become stronger in their faith, help inactive churchgoers return to parish life and move non-Catholics to enter Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults programs.

Hanning has spent recent months preparing pastors and parish staff on how best to welcome fallen-away or returning Catholics.

As part of that effort, the Phoenix Diocese launched a Web site connecting parishes with resources that parish leaders have found useful in their ministry.

It also outlines five themes priests and catechetical leaders identified as key to helping Catholics return to the faith: reconciliation, understanding the Mass, prayer, marriage and family life.

“Our hope is to provide useful and pertinent resources to help each parish form a response that fits,” Hanning said.

“During Lent and into the Easter season, we hope that every parish and every Catholic stands ready to welcome and receive those who return,” Hanning added.

Bishop Olmsted said it’s a blessing to be part of the initiative that if successful will expand to dioceses in Kentucky, Nebraska and Massachusetts for further implementation. Organizers hope to ultimately bring the campaign to national and international viewers.

“The TV ads will move our active Catholics to even greater gratitude for their faith,” the bishop said. “It will prompt the inactive ones to consider again the importance of the Catholic faith in their lives and that of their families.”

Fr. Martin Fox is also impressed and has a couple of suggestions. I have a few – I know Matthew Kelly has his fans, but I am not quite sure I would select him as my featured author in an effort like this. But it’s a start.

I really appreciated the three videos. It saddens me that I can’t imagine my diocese ever wanting these videos shown; too Catholic.

Thanks for posting the Catholics Come Home link. I LOVE what these people are doing for fallen away Catholics.

That one video in particular was very, very moving. By the way, was the guy in the intro Anthony LaPaglia, the actor?

I’m the proud daddy of the cute girl receiving first communion. Seeing the behind-the-scenes work that goes into these videos was fascinating. Glad to see these videos are well received by others.

Tom Peterson, who produced these videos, also has some great pro-life spots. They have run here in Phoenix and several other places – see VirtueMedia.org

I have not had a chance to watch the videos yet but the site looks worthy of a bookmark. The only thing I saw that concerned me a bit was the link to OnceCatholic.com forums. My experience with that site has been a lot of misinformation.

The odd part was that the link to OnceCatholic.com is on the same page as a link to Catholic Answers.

We were visiting my daughter at Arizona State University in September of last year. While driving past the campus’ Catholic church, we saw a crew filming a Christmas nativity scene with child actors. We asked a couple members of the crew what they were filming, and they told us it was a mayonnaise commercial. Well, I just saw that scene from the “mayonnaise commercial” in the “Epic” Catholics Come home vid.

I looked at the videos and am quite impressed. There is a lot of information at the website–quite well done without compromising the teachings of the Catholic Church.

I’ll admit that I am a fan of Bishop Olmsted. He was our Bishop here in Wichita , for a short time. Luckily, he was replaced with another fine man–Bishop Jackels. We just grow good Bishop material in Kansas. One of my personal favs, Archbishop Chaput, was born and raised in my part of Kansas. We do try to share!!

    Amy,
I had meant to come back to this. You said,
“Matthew Kelly has his fans, but I am not quite sure I would select him as my featured author in an effort like this.”

Our parish recently bought boxes of his book, Rediscovering Catholicism, to give to whoever wanted one. I took one as well. I also noticed another box of his books in the parish center, but I forgot the title.

Is there a word of caution you might have regarding his book or others he has written?

From Amy: No, not caution. Just that I don’t think there’s a lot of substance to them. That’s all.

    RE: Matthew Kelly

While I don’t know much about his writings, I do know that when he came to our parish it was packed and a number of my relatives go bonkers over him.

I have one cousin who had a conversion while watching the Passion and then after her moment of conversion she filled her time with reading his material.

One thing I did hear that was unusual was that he says he has or had locutions.

From Amy: Oh, he’s very popular. No question about that.

She was a real trooper, too, though all those takes. ( That hand administering Communion was mine.)
