In my opinion this encyclical is a masterpiece. Although short, its sweep extends from the level of the great issues of history, politics, theology and philosophy down to the personal piety of "offering it up" and ties it all together, with breathtaking erudition, through the idea of hope. It is a tour de force.

The encyclical is of course a teaching of the Church. Yet this encyclical also represents, I think, the culimination of Joseph Ratzinger's many decades of research and reflection on Christianity, history, philosophy, theology and politics. It is the fruit of a very great and holy man's life-long search for the truth.

I was struck by the very last line "on 30 November, the Feast of Saint Andrew the Apostle"

Given the Pope has used this date back in 2005 to Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople to commemorate the Fortieth Anniversary of Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras "to cancel from the Church’s memory the sentence of ex-communication which had been pronounced" and in 2006 on Nov. 30th to give a speech in the Patriarchal Cathedral of St George Istanbul.

I was wondering if the Pope is making an underlining message of hope for the reunion of Catholicism and Orhtodoxy with St. Andrew as the point man.

Great blog.

Fr. James Schall, SJ writes:This encyclical cites words in Greek, Latin, French, and German, etc.
But he does not mention a dialect of Italy, the Venetian dialect! Bakhita - ex loquela Venetiarum quam tunc didicerat – « paron » appellabat [Dominum] (In Venetian dialect, which she was now learning, she used the name “paron” for the living God.) (paron -> master)
