Although short, its sweep extends from the level of the great issues of history, politics, theology and philosophy down to the personal piety of "offering it up" and ties it all together, with breathtaking erudition, through the idea of hope. It is a tour de force. The encyclical is of course a teaching of the Church. Yet this encyclical also represents, I think, the culimination of Joseph Ratzinger's many decades of research and reflection on Christianity, history, philosophy, theology and politics. It is the fruit of a very great and holy man's life-long search for the truth. In my opinion this encyclical is a masterpiece. I was wondering if the Pope is making an underlining message of hope for the reunion of Catholicism and Orhtodoxy with St. Andrew as the point man.
